Three World Records And Seven National Records Set In Halifax

Fifty year old Lynn Marshall , swimming for Carleton University Masters (of whom she is also coach) established three new masters World Record swims when competing at the Halifax Chronos Masters Swim Club Long Course Invitational held at the Centennial Pool on Saturday 19th February.
Marshall, who had previously already set six new world marks over the short course distance (25m) this year was competing in her first long course (50m) meet of the 2011 season.
Marshall lowered the standing world record in the women's (50-54) 400 Freestyle in a time of 4:41.19 breaking the previous mark of 4:42.37 held by Suzanne Heim-Bowen of the USA. In the 200 Backstroke she eclipsed the previous world mark of 2:37.11 held by Naoke Shide of Japan with a 2:33.05 clocking. In the 400 Individual medley Marshall's new world record time of 5:32.26 went under Shide's mark of 5:40.27.
Marshall also set six Canadian National records in the process. In addition to the World marks her 200m Free split in the 400 of 2:20.59, the 100m back split of 1:17.14 in the 200 and 100 Butterfly split of 1:12.36 in the 400IM were all also new 50-54 Canadian records! Marshall has previously held Masters World records in five age groups: (25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, and 45-49)! She was inducted, as an inaugural member, into the Masters Swimming Canada Hall of Excellence in 2009.

The Halifax Chronos Masters Swim Club Mens 800m Freestyle Relay of Rob Ferguson 60, Nigel Kemp 67, Rick Lane 60 and Freeman Churchill 58 established a new Canadian record of 11:08.37, in the 240-279 age category, improving on the 11:30.25 mark they set in 2010. It should be noted that Rick was just 0.8 secs outside the standing 60-64 Canadian record in the 200 Freestyle with a wonderful 2:31.14 lead off swim.
48 Swimmers representing 13 teams from Nova Scotia (9), New Brunswick (2) and Ontario (2) participated in this year's version of the long course meet. 26 of the 60 Provincial records established at the meet fell to Chronos swimmers: Tricia Grant 45-49 (7), Linda Hunt 55-59 (4), Ralph Davis 70-74 (3), Nigel Kemp 65-69 (3), Rick Lane 60-64 (2), Denise MacDonald 35-39 (2), Wade James 45-49 (1), Rob Ferguson 60-64 (1), Andy White 25-29 (1), Kyle Avery 25-29 (1) and Freeman Churchill 55-59 (1).
