In 1988 at Nationals in Vancouver ,I swam my first 1500 m sharing a lane with Eugene . Before the swim started he asked me what time I wanted to swim the event in and I said under 34 min. Each swimmer started from the opposite end of the lane and Eugene told me that if I passed him at the same spot each time I would get my goal time . In fact I swam it in 33:46 and was so pleased with my result and with his support . I have never forgotten him.
