Interview: Mackwood's Marathon Swim

Technosport's Genevieve Mackwood swam the 17.5 mile Ederle swim in New York in 2011. In this article on the MSO web site, learn about:

  • her background as a swimmer and her focus on technique;
  • how she progressed from 1km open water swims up to this marathon event (it's not a race!) including what other events she swam and how she came up with a training plan;
  • what challenges she faced and how she met her fears head on;
  • what's next (she's going bigger!);
  • and a list of resources she found helpful.
Be inspired by her teammate Kerry Smith's full article here: http://www.mastersswimmingontario.ca/new1.htm

Comments:

Nice write-up showing how to build-up to a big swim and how much the results can be dependent upon the weather and water. Too many swimmers think they can become knowledgeable and do it in a year - they may do it, but will probably never appreciate their good luck. Gen's approach to train matches the "total body confusion" promoted by Mike Oram (Channel Pilot) i.e. not knowing what will be next in the training session or when it will end. To swim through a 5-hour squall and finish a 16-hour swim requires a lot of pace control that comes through experience and proper training. Great article. Bryan Finlay, Solo Swims of Ontario.
